RYU TO SOBAKASU NO HIME Depuis LA TRAVERSÉE DU TEMPS en 2006, Mamoru Hosoda connaît une carrière et une reconnaissance enviables. En particulier auprès de la critique et du public français qui l'a adopté, appréciant son approche familiale et artistique de l'animation. SUMMER WARS, LES ENFANTS LOUPS, AME & YUKI et LE GARÇON ET LA BÊTE sont ainsi des réussites. Après un MIRAÏ, MA PETITE SOEUR moins convaincant, il nous revient en 2021 avec BELLE. Suzu, jeune fille complexée et orpheline de sa mère, se crée un avatar dans U », un monde virtuel où se croisent chaque jour des millions de personnes. Dans ce réseau social où elle adopte le nom de Belle, elle devient vite et de façon étonnante une vedette admirée, bien que sa vraie identité reste secrète. Dans U », elle rencontre Dragon, un avatar brutal et agressif à l'apparence terrifiante. Dragon, aussi surnommé la Bête » ... Suzu, personnage principal de BELLE, est en effet une adolescente introvertie, mal dans sa peau, élevée seule par son père depuis le décès accidentel de sa mère. Mal à l'aise dans la société de sa petite ville rurale, elle ne s'y épanouit pas. Lorsqu'elle découvre U », un réseau social dans lequel les individus adoptent l'identité d'avatars aux physiques déterminés par leurs caractères, Suzu y devient Belle, reflet de sa beauté et de sa force intérieures. Les personnages enfilent une paire d'oreillettes et s'y retrouvent aussitôt, commandant leurs avatars on ne sait comment. Cette technologie paraît d'une certaine façon magique ! Et dans les histoires magiques, quand il y a une Belle, il y a souvent une Bête. Ici, le personnage de la Bête est effrayant, solitaire, ostracisé par les représentants de la loi. Mais il vit dans un château sublime où il cultive des roses, entouré de petites Intelligences Artificielles cocasses. Le conte La Belle et le Bête » n'est pas loin. BELLE revendique clairement cette influence, allant jusqu'à pasticher la scène de danse vue dans la version Disney animée de LA BELLE ET LA BÊTE. La Bête est un personnage fort et terrifiant. Dans un état de souffrance permanent, il est chaotique dans son besoin de détruire qu'il retourne contre les autres et contre lui-même. La question qu'il pose, son mystère qui prend une nouvelle tournure dans cette combinaison entre monde virtuel et monde réel est qui est la Bête dans la vraie vie, quelle personnalité a pu être interprétée comme la Bête par U » ? BELLE joue sur l'antagonisme de Belle et de Dragon, ses deux personnages principaux. Stylistiquement, il joue aussi sur l'opposition entre le monde réel et le monde virtuel de U ». Le monde réel est décrit de façon naturaliste. Nous y retrouvons la paisible campagne verdoyante des ENFANTS LOUPS, AME & YUKI, ainsi que l'univers des adolescentes japonaises dépeint dans LA TRAVERSÉE DU TEMPS. Ces moments sont souvent gracieux, évoqués avec justesse et soin par un Mamoru Hosoda dans sa veine méditative et doucement humoristique. Tout l'inverse du monde virtuel de U » qui, quant à lui, s'avère foisonnant, coloré, bariolé même. Le metteur en scène a déjà représenté un univers virtuel dans SUMMER WARS. Il reprend la même formule en la poussant encore plus loin dans une créativité débridée, parfois poussée jusqu'au kitsch, en particulier lors des scènes de chansons, sorte d'opéras électroniques pour jeunes filles très fleur bleue ! Comme de nombreux métrages mettant en scène les réseaux sociaux, BELLE n'en cache pas les travers. La popularité de Belle s'accompagne de retours de bâton, de critiques injustes et basses, de confrontations avec des personnalités toxiques employant l'avatar comme un masque malhonnête. Ils offrent aussi un champ d'expression inédit, permettant à tout un chacun de partager les points les plus positifs de sa personnalité, de porter un temps un masque derrière lequel il est plus facile d'oser. Avant de s'assumer pleinement et de se révéler avec sincérité aux autres, pour enfin communiquer sans entrave. BELLE délivre son regard humaniste au moyen d'une animation et d'un graphisme très soignés, vraiment adaptés au grand écran, oscillant entre contemplation et intimisme d'une part et excès baroques d'autre part. Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime reinforces the idea that a gold-covered turd, is at the end of the day, still a turd. This sorry excuse for a Beauty and the Beast inspired film falls short in many vital aspects, calling into question exactly "whose idea was this?" and "did anyone really read the script?". Watching this film felt as though the director had cut out chunks from the storyline at random. Frequently, scenes would fail to adequately flesh out the narrative, resulting in an extreme lack of explanation for character motives or general functionalities of the world. Also present, was an excessive absence of continuity. In ... The animation is fairly good, however, at times was very underwhelming. In particular, one scene later in the film a side character confession scene has the female involved stand completely still for about a minute straight. It's as though she didn't disconnect from the app, but from life itself, reminding the viewer of the feeling of losing a teammate in an online game. The music composition is lovely, but is juxtaposed against an utterly mind-numbing script. If the soundtrack of the movie is on Spotify, I would highly recommend checking that out instead of watching the movie. Overall, this movie was a serious letdown, but was somewhat entertaining to laugh with friends who are just as confused about what is going at any given moment. All you have to do to stop abusive parents is stand in between them and their children. Afterwards, just let them live together like normal. Bing Bang Boom Pow, problem solved.
